That Was Yesterday

From Washington Park, Anacortes

This is today.  After a minor monsoon moved through yesterday, today has been glorious.  This is a view from Washington Park in Anacortes on the northwest corner of Fidalgo Island.  In Rosario Strait, a state ferry approaches the Anacortes terminal.  The larger island behind the ferry is Cypress.  To the left of Cypress at the edge is Orcas Island in the San Juans and to the right is Lummi Island off Bellingham, Washington.

A Washington State Ferry Approaching Anacortes

The State of Washington operates the largest ferry system in the nation.  The Anacortes terminal provides services to the San Juan Islands and Sydney, British Columbia, Canada.  A destination is not necessary to enjoy a ferry ride.  Just riding it out and back is a year-around pleasure, but avoid holiday weekends.

Weathered Old Fir Tree

This fir tree is the logo for several Anacortes businesses.  After so many years, it looks like it's on its last legs.  I would hate to see this beautiful old icon lost.  I think the seagull would agree with me.  Can you see why an Asian style garden fits in well here?

Fidalgo Native

One of the locals makes his home in Washington Park.  They always stand nicely for their portraits.  Gulls are difficult to ID, but with pink legs, this is probably a Western Gull, Larus occidentalis.  It could also be a glaucous-winged Gull (Larus glaucescens) or even a hybrid of the two.  I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows for sure.
